Dental Crowns in Bowling Green, KY

Over time, your teeth can get damaged due to tooth decay, injuries, or use. When this happens, you have several options to restore your tooth, but one of the most effective is getting a dental crown, which acts as armor, shielding your fragile teeth from further damage. At Cox Family Dentistry in Bowling Green, KY, we want the best for your oral health.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged tooth to protect, cover and restore the shape of your teeth when fillings don’t solve the problem. The dental crown is cemented into place on your tooth, covering the visible portion of the tooth, providing structural support, enhancing the beauty of the tooth, and providing a complete smile and a functional bite.

What Happens at a Dental Crown Procedure?

This is what you can expect when you come in for a dental crown procedure at Cox Family Dentistry:

  • The area around the tooth is numbed: Before starting the procedure, Dr. Cox will numb your tooth and the tissue around it to help reduce pain or discomfort. Because your mouth is numb, you may feel some vibrations from this, but no pain.
  • The tooth is prepared: Once the area is numb, your tooth is reduced to make room for the crown (the amount removed depends on the type of crown used), and any decay or damage is removed: If a significant portion of the tooth is lost because of damage or decay, a composite material will be used to rebuild the tooth’s structure for the crown.
  • Crown cemented in place: Dr. Cox will check the crown’s fit and make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper bite, shade, and shape. We’ll then place your permanent crown with dental glue or permanent cement. From there, you’ll be set with a natural-looking, durable crown that will restore your oral health and confidence.

How Do You Care for a Dental Crown?

To help your crown last as long as possible, you must care for them properly. This includes brushing and flossing twice daily and having routine checkups and cleanings every six months. You should also avoid sticky and hard foods like ice or candies and kick bad habits like nail biting and chewing on pencils as they can chip, crack, or break your crown. Consider wearing a mouthguard if you play sports and use a night guard if you have a grinding and clenching habit.

Dental Crown Cost

A dental crown typically ranges from $1,100 to $1,300 but can vary widely depending on several factors, like the material used and the amount of prep work needed. Insurance does help with some of the cost but will not likely cover the whole price.
